Are we preparing English language learners for high achievement for the 21st century?

Presenter: Dr. Mai Dao, Division of Teacher Education, San Jose University

Dr. Mai Dao is currently teaching at San Jose State University in the Division of Teacher Education Credential Program and the Division of Special Education & Rehabilitative Services. She holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of California at Berkeley, with a concentration in the areas of alternative assessment, teacher training for the changing demographics and methodology in English as a Second Language for students with special needs. Mai Dao is the author of the recent publication entitled "English instruction for high achievement in the 21st century: Vietnamese-American perspectives."

This presentation is geared toward teachers, administrators, policy makers and anyone seriously concerned about English language teaching and learning. Based on Vietnamese-American students’ experiences, issues regarding English as second language instruction will be raised and revisited to address students’ learning needs for high achievement in the 21st century. The presentation will focus on designing learner-centered instruction, building from students’ strength. Practical recommendations for language and literacy development based on research and practitioners’ experiences will be offered.
